BRAND PORTRAITS / 01 / SEIKO
A watchmaker with room for very different ideas of a good watch. The useful question is which part of Seiko speaks to you.
Seiko is a natural starting point for exploring Japanese watchmaking because its catalogue offers several routes in. An everyday automatic, a sporting watch and a dressier dial can all carry the same name while asking quite different things of their owner. Treat the collections as a map, then compare individual references.
From a Ginza shop to a watchmaking name
The beginnings matter because Seiko grew from selling and repairing timepieces into manufacturing them. Seikosha began producing wall clocks in 1892; wristwatches followed as the business developed. These dates describe different stages, rather than competing answers to the question of when Seiko started. Source: Seiko’s official history.
How to read the collection map
Start with the type of watch you want to live with. The following is an editorial browsing guide to the collections listed on Seiko’s global website, not a promise that every watch within a line has the same specification.
| Collection | A useful starting interest | Compare before buying |
|---|---|---|
| 5 Sports | Everyday mechanical watches | Case dimensions, bezel and strap fit |
| Prospex | Sport and activity-focused designs | Exact movement and intended water use |
| Presage | Dressier styles and dial character | Dial finish, thickness and legibility |
| Astron | Electronic timekeeping and travel | Time-setting functions and charging instructions |
| King Seiko | Mechanical watches with a distinct case-design identity | Proportions, bracelet fit and movement specification |
What the name on the dial does not tell you
A collection name is not a substitute for a specification sheet. In our SRPE55 versus SRPD55 comparison, two Seiko 5 references share a movement but differ in case dimensions, bezel design and strap width. Those differences can be more important to everyday comfort than the logo.
Likewise, do not assume a sporty-looking watch is suitable for diving. Read the water-use instructions for the exact reference. If production origin is part of your buying decision, check the individual watch and its documentation rather than inferring it from the Japanese brand name.
Seiko’s history includes the first Grand Seiko in 1960. Today, use Grand Seiko’s own catalogue when researching those watches; a Seiko collection comparison is not a complete guide to Grand Seiko.
Where we would start
Write down your preferred size, how often you expect to wear the watch, and whether you want to wind and reset it. Then shortlist two references within one collection. Try both on, compare the clasp and read the dial at a glance. Add a third only if it solves a problem the first two leave unanswered.
If you want a solar option, our three-brand solar comparison includes the Prospex SNE573. If you are new to movements, begin with quartz, solar and automatic explained.
